Teak Dining Chairs for Villas: What to Settle Before You Order
Before teak dining chairs for villas go into production, five things need a firm answer: the seat and table heights, where each chair will stand, how the joints are made, which sample you approved, and how the colour stays even across the whole order. Settle them on paper and the chairs in the last villa will match the chairs in the first.
Problems with villa dining chairs rarely start with the wood. They start with decisions nobody wrote down. This guide follows the order in which those questions come up.
What size should teak dining chairs for villas be?
Start with the table, not the chair. Most dining tables stand 74 to 76 cm high. A seat height of 45 to 47 cm leaves the usual gap of around 30 cm between seat and tabletop, which is enough room for legs without guests sitting too low. Armchairs need one more measurement. The arms have to clear the underside of the table, or the chair cannot be pushed in and spends the whole day in the walkway.
Plan roughly 60 cm of table length per person. A table for six with three chairs on each side needs about 180 cm, and the chairs have to fit inside that width. Our Alea Dining Chair is 57 cm wide, so three of them fit along 180 cm with a little air between them. A deep lounge-style armchair often does not.
Behind the chairs, leave around 90 cm to the nearest wall or cabinet so guests can stand up without scraping the floor. In compact villa layouts, this is often the number that decides between armchairs and side chairs.
Indoor dining room or open-air terrace?
Villa dining areas on Lombok and Sumbawa are often half outside, on a covered terrace or right next to the pool. That changes the chair more than most buyers expect.
Solid teak handles rain and sun without any treatment. Left alone outdoors, it turns silver-grey within a few months. Oiled regularly, it keeps its warmer tone. Decide which look you want before ordering, because the finish is applied at the workshop. A lacquered indoor finish will start to peel once it sits in the rain.
Woven seats behave differently. Natural rattan and seagrass are comfortable and stay cool in the heat, but they belong under a roof. For spots that get direct rain, choose a slatted teak seat or a synthetic weave made for outdoor use. Cushions outside need quick-dry foam and outdoor fabric. Ordinary foam holds water for days after a storm. We compare the two main materials in more detail in Teak vs. Rattan: Which Furniture Material Is Right for a Tropical Climate?
How do you check the joinery on a teak chair?
A dining chair takes more strain than almost any other piece in a villa. Guests lean back on two legs and drag it across tile floors every evening. The joints carry all of that.
Ask how the legs meet the seat frame. In a mortise and tenon joint, one piece is cut to fit into a slot in the other and glued. That holds far longer than parts joined only with screws or dowels. Turn a sample upside down: corner blocks under the seat are a good sign, while visible screw heads at the main joints are not.
Then ask how the wood was dried. Teak that is joined while it still holds too much moisture keeps shrinking afterwards, and the joints start to work loose. A serious supplier can tell you how the timber was dried and for how long.
Why should you approve a sample chair first?
One chair, delivered before the full order is made, answers questions no drawing can. You sit on it at your real table and see the finish in your own light. Turn it over and look at the underside as well.
Once approved, that sample becomes the reference for the whole production. Keep it on site. If a chair in the delivery looks different, you compare it with the sample instead of arguing about a photo on a phone screen. Write the approval into the order with a date, so both sides know which version counts.
How do you keep the chairs matching across several villas?
This matters most when one design goes into many units. Teak is a natural material, and its colour varies from log to log, from pale honey to a deeper brown. Across a large order, those small differences add up.
Ask for all chairs of one design to be made in the same production run and finished from the same batch of oil or stain. Chairs made months apart can differ in tone even when the specification on paper is identical.
When the delivery arrives, unpack everything before placing anything. Group the chairs by tone, so the chairs around each table look alike, instead of filling one villa straight from one crate. Order a few spare chairs from the same run as well. Replacing a broken chair two years later with one from a new batch is exactly how a matching set stops matching.
How long does an order of teak dining chairs take?
For standard pieces, plan 1 to 2 months from confirmed order to delivery. Custom orders may take longer, and the sample round comes before that. The safest moment to start the conversation is when the floor plans are fixed, not when the villas are already finished and the opening date is close.
